                            Born in Philippines, February 22,1998

Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education, major in

                          General Education.

I am a student of the University of the Cordilleras, enrolled

in third year, first trimester of School Year 2019-2020. I am an

elementary and a high school graduate from my Alma Mater in

Davao City, which i considered also to be my hometown.

I am proudly a Mindanaoan because my father lives there. My

native tongue was Bisaya, though I can also speak Hiligaynon,

Filipino and English. I am a typical type of guy who is interested in

learning other cultures from diverse ethnic groups in the Philippines.

One of my aspirations in life was to become a successful Elementary Teacher because I believe that every kid is a potential genius, and they are the molders of our society. A good society is determined by a good education, but it will only be achieved if ethical learning will start on the four pillars of every homes. Considered as second parents, I do not teach my students how to think an idea, but to teach how to act or react on it because through that, they will be problem solvers in society, not problem makers.

My Teaching Philosophy

I believe that all human beings are intelligent. I don’t believe that slow-learners, “no read, no write” children are dumb, because God created man in His own image, according to the likeness of Him. He created man with emotions, intellect and will as a mark that we be made like Him. This is what I always keep in mind whenever I entered a classroom or remediate a student during free time. I also believe that everyone has the ability to learn. Learning is a unique process in humans because they used this knowledge to improve more in life; like a sailor voyaging his ship across the vast ocean of unknown, children also apply what they have learned in their environment.

I also believe that every children has their own unique journey in life. It does not matter what tools they are equipped in their minds because it will be pointless if they cannot use it in their journey. So as in education, sometimes I forget their need, what I really think is what is best for them. Moreover, deciding based on my own perspective can be the worst thing that will happen to them. A child will seek for something he needs before he seeks to please himself. Like a baby, she will cry for food first instead of satisfying her hunger by playing a toy. That is why I wanted to cater their needs, not mine.

Furthermore, I believe that children are as fragile as a glass, but as strong as a brick. I can see them like a thermos where if you look outside they are strong and healthy, but deep inside their hearts lie lots of frustrations from school, at home, or even from their friendship. This is the reason why the performance of each children affects them. In addition, I will be concerned about what they feel inside before we will have our one-on-one class.

Finally, I believe that a teacher like me plays a vital role in both schools and communities because we are the ones who will facilitate the learning, whether inside the classroom or outside the classroom. For me, teaching is the noblest profession and the teachers are the noblest gifts that a student can receive.

Personal Reflection

I am fascinated with the overall teaching experience I had with the Grade 5 students at Le Van Tam Primary School. Not only did my students learn about my lesson, but I learned a lot while I was executing my lessons to them. I learned about how to improve my classroom management, teaching strategies, time management, learning environment, and activities that stimulate critical thinking, creativity, communication and collaboration. I will dwell on it one by one.

Firstly, I appreciated how the Vietnamese teachers implement classroom management inside the classroom. They have many techniques on how to do it. Like for example, panel discussions, singing songs, and imposing classroom rules will aid them to achieve an effective classroom management. I learned that by these things, I would be able to create an effective classroom management in my classroom someday thus increasing the quality of my teaching. I was also amazed with the teachers because they do not implement negative punishment as students might incur trauma and fear in their hearts, thus preventing them to give their full learning potential.

Second, I commend the teachers whom I had observed because of their innovative minds to make a teaching strategy suitable for 21st Century learners. With the help of some teaching materials and instruments, they came up with an environment where learning is clearly shown.

Teaching strategies like group activities, group games, group brainstorming increases the chance of students instilling the lessons in their minds. Also with the help of advance technologies, these teaching strategies could be more efficient among students.

Third, time management, for me, is essential in efficiently deliver the lesson. Teachers there as I had observed, always finish their lesson five minutes before the bell rings, which for me is a good practice to follow. Consuming others time will result to conflict and inefficiency. Students will get bored if I will spend too much time in one lesson. I must bear in mind that time is gold. Five minutes extension is not healthy, and I will bear it always in my mind.

Fourth, classroom environment affects the mood of students. A bad, distracting classroom environment make them uninterested to learn. Colors, ambience, lighting and instructional materials aids them to learn more. With the right choice and the right amount, students will love learning and will never lose attention to the teacher. One among these is the teaching materials. Although Le Van Tam Primary School is a typical type of school, I was stunned of the smart boards, and large smart televisions installed in every classroom. If compared it to some public schools in the Philippines, they are far better due to the equipment they had.

Lastly, 21st century teaching focuses on leveling up the critical thinking, creativity, collaboration and communication because gone are the days where traditional method of teaching is used due to its disadvantages. Graphic organizers, puzzles, riddles, mathematical problems and essays are the strategies used in implementing authentic learning.

Vietnam's curriculum is much different compared to the Philippines I should say, but the learning that I acquired from my 25-days stay there is priceless. I would also like to thank the SEAMEO, the Dong Thap University, and the University of Cordilleras for letting me experience this one-time privilege to see personally the educational system of Vietnam in a nutshell.
